2008 HURRICANE SEASON

Let’s talk about the 2008 Hurricane season. Well in the beginning, there was Arthur, tropical storm, then Bertha, not much to tell then Cristoval or something like that, and then Dolly. Dolly gave the Midwest some rain, then Eduoard, well; I don’t think Texas got any rain from any of those Tropical Storms. Tropical storm Fay was next, she swirled around, producing rain, but not for Texas. Gustav was next, he swirled around in the Atlantic, and reeked havoc on Haiti, and Cuba, went into the Gulf and really didn’t do much, Gustav was a hurricane though, headed straight towards Louisiana. By the time it made landfall it was downgraded to a tropical storm. Very minimal damage, some flooding, but nothing compared to what Katrina did after the Levees breached. My husband and I were actually trolling around in the Gulf of Mexico when Gustav was wreaking havoc on Haiti and Cuba, two extra days on that cruise ship. Then there came Hurricane Hanna, she swirled around, reeked a bit on Haiti, and then headed towards the eastern seaboard, and gave the east coast some rain and a little flooding. But who was behind Hanna, that would be Ike, and behind Ike was Josephine, who fizzled out before anything could even form. Ike for that matter, a monster size Hurricane like Katrina.

Ike was heading towards Houston and Galveston on Friday September 12th, 2008, and what was in the aftermath, is still an unknown calculation of life and loss. Ike nearly destroyed Galveston just by the water surge alone. Houses and businesses were sucked off their stilts or pegs, and taken to sea and then washed back onto land. Houston and surrounding areas lost power, lots of flooding. I believe that they are still without power.

Galveston is a disaster area. Will they ever really know the amount of people that stayed in their houses to ride out the storm, houses that were sucked out to sea. Very little amounts of housing were left still standing.

Right now, there is nothing churning off the coast of Africa which is where all of our tropical disturbances come from. The pacific has their share of hurricanes as well.

We pray for everyone, that everything someday gets put back to normal. Ike is almost as bad as Hurricane Isaac who was the most destructive hurricane that hit Galveston in 1900. Isaac is now a retired storm name, which may be the fate or Ike as well, and maybe even Katrina.
